Steven Wegner told him he couldn’t park his sport-utility vehicle on the sidewalk in front of the main entrance of the Hernando County Detention Center.

Roberts refused to move his vehicle while in the lobby, and again refused after Wegner escorted him outside, deputies say.

Roberts was ordered out of the vehicle and was arrested on charges of criminal mischief and resisting an officer without violence.

After repeatedly refusing the request, Roberts decided to “comply”: by slamming his auto into reverse, striking a nearby park bench.

He then snapped and drove the vehicle onto the lawn, sheriff’s deputies said, even targeting a patrol auto. At the last instant, Roberts turned to the left, continued in a full circle and struck a flag pole, according to deputies.

Roberts was released Tuesday after posting $3,000 bond, jail records show.
