State police made a traffic stop at Law St. and New Orleans St. around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

A witness, who asked to be identified only as James P. out of concern for his safety, said more than a dozen law enforcement officers were at the location apparently looking for someone when a man in a gray outfit motioned to the officers and then began firing at them. Within minutes, New Orleans and Louisiana State police officers arrived on the scene and began to search for the suspects. NOPD and State Police Officers returned fire and struck the subject, who later died at the scene. The two suspects are still at-large.

One of the three men inside the vehicle opened fire on a Louisiana State Police trooper who stopped the driver believing the auto had been stolen.

SWAT and the FBI were also assisting in the investigation.

“This is still a very active scene”, he said.

Detectives were reviewing video footage from in-car cameras from both agencies as well as NOPD body cameras that were activated at the scene, Harrison said.

All of the accused ran away after the exchange. The NOPD Force Investigation Team is leading the joint investigation into the death of the suspect.

A spokesperson with the New Orleans Police Department confirmed the shooting.
