Authorities say they got several 911 calls about an emotionally disturbed person and an armed robbery at the Cooper Park Houses in Williamsburg.
Investigators say the responding officers opened fire after the man pointed his gun at them.
The shooting took place after police initially responded to reports of a robbery, according to Deputy Commissioner Steven Davis.
Maddrey did not say how many officers fired their weapons or the number of rounds they fired.
The suspect was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Police could not immediately provide information on whether one or both of the officers fired on the suspect.
The two officers were taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center for observation.
“The police, they patrol”, she added.
“[The suspect] walked away, and then I heard someone yell, ‘Freeze!'” said 17-year-old Brandon Herron. “When the shots died down I saw all the cruisers pulling in”. “I didn’t know what was going on”. “He said ‘I’ll kill you”.
The suspect was screaming very loudly and she said “he truly looked like he was high on something”.
“He said come on, come on, come on”, Adams said, recalling the suspect’s instructions.
