It took seven officers to safely get the suspect into the cell as he continued to resist while shouting “Allahu akbar”.

He will appear in Townsville magistrates court on Friday by videolink.

The Queensland Police Service said he had been charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, one count of serious animal cruelty and twelve counts of serious assault.

Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21, died after being stabbed repeatedly at a hostel in Home Hill, Queensland, Australia, on August 23.

Mr Jackson’s father will arrive in Townsville tonight.

“I think we should be cautious by not associating this phrase with terrorism and empowering the terrorists”.

British backpacker Thomas Jackson was critically injured in the attack.

Witnesses claim they heard a man yell “Allahu Akbar”, or God is Great in Arabic, before Ms Ayliffe-Chung was fatally stabbed.

The Sun reports that detectives are now probing whether or not Ayad had developed an infatuation-turned-obsession with Chung.

Mia Ayliffe-Chung was stabbed to death, allegedly by French man Smail Ayad.

“Certainly from Mia’s point of view, there was no romantic connection”, he said.

“There will be those that seek to exploit this and I believe they will be unhelpful”, Byrne was quoted by the “Brisbane Times” as saying. Several people have been arrested on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks, and the government has said some 150 Australians have been recruited to fight with jihadist group “Islamic State” in Syria and Iraq.

Briton Tom Jackson, 30, was injured trying to help Miss Ayliffe-Chung.

The alleged attack was witnessed by up to 30 onlookers, some of whom are understood to have recorded the incident on their mobile phone cameras.

“There is no doubt Mr Jackson attempted to render aid to Mia”, police Superintendent Ray Rohweder told Queensland’s Courier Mail. That’s certainly a line of inquiry.

Police was in contact with the British consulate which would liaise with the victims’ families, Rohweder said.

Ayad had undergone a psychiatric assessment, but Supt Rohweder would not divulge what that revealed.

A statement from the school said: “Everyone at the school is shocked and saddened at the news that Mia has lost her life in the most tragic of circumstances”.

“She was living in Surfers on the Gold Coast and planning on exploring Australia, with the intention to find a sponsorship as she wanted to stay here as she had fallen in love with the country and its people”. “It’s sad knowing that she won’t be able to do those things”.

“She was a attractive girl who had her whole life ahead of her and we spoke of what the future may hold in store for her and what she wanted to do”, he continued.
