The girl’s mother, 46, was reportedly stabbed in the chest and is in a serious condition, while her sisters, aged 12 and 14, were also taken to hospital.
The family were having breakfast when the attack took place.
French media also said the man was not on the so-called “Fiche S” list, associated with radicalized individuals.
Raphael Balland, the local prosecutor, told reporters that there was no truth to rumors that the victim’s state of dress was a possible motive for the attack.
The 37-year-old suspect – said to be of Moroccan origin – was arrested by two police reservists after trying to escape in his auto and is being held in the nearby town Gap.
According to first reports, the alleged perpetrator was not happy with the way his neighbours, in the adjoining chalet were dressed.
The mother sustained an injury to her sternum and was expected to survive.

Many angrily denounced what they believed was another Islamist attack, but the local mayor of Garde-Colombe Edmond Francou appealed for calm and urged the public not to jump to any conclusions.
