Mildura man Bowe Maddigan, 30, appeared before the Supreme Court of Victoria on Friday where he pleaded guilty to committing an indecent act with a child under 16 and murder.
11-year-old Zoe Buttigieg was raped and murdered in her home last October.
Zoe was found dead in her Wangaratta home in north-east Victoria, at 11am on October 25 past year – after police found Maddigan barefoot and walking along the Hume Highway in a paranoid and erratic state.
Zoe had been brutally raped and murdered.
Ms Saunders later told police that Maddigan had been the life of the party.
He had pleaded not guilty to murder at the end of a committal hearing this year.
Police found Maddigan walking barefoot along the Hume Freeway on October 25 and he was taken to Northeast Health Wangaratta for psychiatric treatment.

Maddigan previously pleaded not guilty in Wangaratta Magistrates Court in May but changed it during a hearing in the Supreme Court in Melbourne.
