Then her cub started wandering away, and fortunately she made a decision to go after the baby instead of sticking around to fight.

Nelson’s recounting of the fight turned out to be one of CBC’s most popular stories that week. A 61-year-old Canadian man was confronted by a 300-pound mother bear, after he happened upon her cub.

The bear struck Nelson in the chest, back and face and he injured his knuckles by punching it in the teeth after failing to find a rock or stick to defend himself. After startling a cub on their walk, mama bear came running.

Hats off to Rick Nelson on this one, one fearless individual. It’s as close to that bear scene in “The Revenant” as we’re going to get in real life.

Rick Nelson, 61, says he fought off a bear near Sudbury on July 3, 2016.

Ladies’ day ends in massive drunken brawl’I knew it would swing first with its left but it would really come with its right, because most bears are right-handed, ‘ Rick said. You want to make sure if you punch a bear that you’re hitting it straight in its snout.

“I knew right away I was in trouble”, Nelson told CBC News, noting the cub had poked its head out from behind a shrub before letting out a desperate cry for its mother.

‘So sometimes black bears get a really bad rap.

“[The mother bear] turned around and it was snorting blood”.

The bear and her cub chose to retreat back into the woods.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, black bear attacks are extremely rare and they usually only attack when they feel threatened. It looked at me, and I thought, ‘Oh no.

Speaking after the ordeal, he said black bears are only unsafe when there is a cub involved – but when there is, they can be lethal. Nelson said. “To tell you the truth, that was the only time I was afraid …” “So I really lucked out there”, he added.
