“The police are going to do what they do”, he said.

By then, police presence had turned heavy, and rumors about the shooting flew.

However, Mr. Belmar said those who fired shots weren’t demonstrators. According to CNN, the unidentified young man was headed into surgery. Eventually, a few lobbed glass bottles and rocks at officers. All 10 are felonies. His condition is unknown.

Investigators recovered a 9 mm Sig Sauer that had been stolen in Cape Girardeau, Belmar said.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that a man, 18-year-old Tyrone Harris Jr. The case also led to new policing strategies, including the introduction of police body cameras.

Harris’ father, Tyrone Harris Sr, told the AP news agency on Monday the police version of events is “a bunch of lies”. Police say he is in critical condition.

“The recent acts of violence will not be tolerated in a community that has worked so tirelessly over the last year to rebuild and become stronger”, St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger said in a statement.

Nonetheless, Gaskin says he expected Monday night to be free of reactive violence, thievery and destruction.

Several volleys of gunshots rang out as police in riot gear tried to disperse demonstrators blocking traffic and smashing storefront windows along a street that was a flashpoint of last year’s unrest in the St. Louis suburb after Michael Brown, 18, was slain.

It fuelled a national protest movement against racial bias by police. The coalition includes the Don’t Shoot Coalition, Hands Up United, Organization for Black Struggle and several others.

Police and onlookers take cover as gunfire erupts along West Florissant Ave.in Ferguson Sunday night. STL Today also reported that they were not wearing body cameras.

The anniversary of the killing, which cast greater scrutiny on how police interact with black communities, has sparked days of renewed protests, though until Sunday they had been peaceful and without any arrests. Bowen’s Beauty Supply Store on West Florissant was vandalized around 8:30 p.m. Police believe the person stole a cash register but then dropped the register outside a nearby store and fled.

Sunday night’s shooting occurred after a gun battle between rival groups in the center of the Ferguson protests. They were both hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Harris allegedly opened fire on officers in that unmarked vehicle. Harris attempted to fire at the officers again, but was shot. All four fired back.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether any one was injured in the shooting, but minutes after the shots were heard, an Associated Press photographer saw a man lying face down, covered in blood, behind a boarded-up restaurant.
