Closing any beach in Hawaii is a drastic move, but even one shark attack is a shark attack too many and in Oahu they are looking at three in the last several days.
“These last two have been pretty aggressive, resulting in critical injuries”, said Shayne Enright, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman.
KHON2 was told the attack could’ve been from either a reef shark or a tiger shark.
Shark warning signs will remain posted at Lanikai and Waikiki and lifeguards will continue to monitor and patrol the waters, officials said. She said he’s listed in critical condition.
Hawaii News Now The first victim, a 44-year-old man, was taken to the hospital after a serious injury sustained while he was swimming in the waters between the Mokulua Island and Lanikai Beach. “It has been an active year [for shark attacks], unfortunately”. This was originally reported as the second shark attack on Saturday, but upon examination at the hospital doctors believe this man was attacked by an eel.
“We see sharks out here, you know, but mostly small sharks”, he told KITV. It’s been reported that the man, who was listed as being in serious condition, was bit on his left foot.
The surfer recalled his will to survive, swimming to a nearby paddle-board, with the 13-foot tiger shark still viciously tearing into him, he said.
All shark attacks this year have happened in turbid or murky water.
