MarShawn McCarrel, who was only 23 years old, shot himself in front of the capitol building at around 6 p.m. Monday night.

MarShawn M. McCarrel, II, a well-known Black Lives Matter activist based in OH, has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials say.

Active in the Black Lives Matter movement, McCarrel helped organize Ohio-based protests in the wake of the Michael Brown incident in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014.

According to the Dispatch, a post on his Facebook page hours before the shooting said: “My demons won today”.

Cvetan says police don’t have any answers at this time.

He also took to Twitter, declaring that he “pissed on the state house” before taking his own life.

But they said today that McCarrel should be remembered for the years preceding his death, not for the act itself.

He attended the NAACP’s Image Awards on Friday, Pursuing Our Dreams wrote on its Facebook.

McCarrel was the founder of a local community organization, Pursuing Our Dreams, which launched an effort to feed Columbus’ homeless.

“He is selfless and will give his last in order to make sure others don’t go without, ‘ read a nomination page for the award”.

A phone call to McCarrel’s mother, Leatha Wellington, was not immediately returned. He spent several months homeless after he graduated high school – and the experience left him wanting to help others in a similar situation.
