Police say a man with a meat cleaver has attacked an officer in New York City and has been shot at least twice during a struggle with officers trying to subdue him.
Police said Joudeh’s last known address was in Queens, but said he was living in his auto at the time of the incident.
According to the Daily News, officers approached Joudeh about 5 p.m.as he tried to remove the boot from the vehicle.
The hero NY cop who cornered an attacker wielding an 11-inch meat cleaver has left hospital sporting a gruesome facial scar.
Joudeh has been shot a couple of times on West 32 Street, near the Penn Station, by some officers on Wednesday afternoon after a chase which ended in three injured officers, said the cops.
The detective was struck in the head by the cleaver causing an approximate 6 inch gash.
A spokesperson for the New York Police Department said the detective involved has 16 years of experience on the force and is in a serious condition in hospital. Detective Brian O’Donnell said, “Thank you”, while police officers and hospital staff cheered him as he left Bellevue Hospital. Officers tried to use a Taser on the suspect, but he kept running west on 32nd Street. The officers pursued him and broadcast his description over the radio. The suspect then reportedly ran away.
Three officers surrounded Joudeh but he refused to surrender, and the officers fired 18 shots, Fox News reports. “He was hit five or six times”.
The feet of the suspect Akram Joudeh are seen as he is pinned to the ground by a group of officers. “It looked like he was dead”. According to the NYPD, Joudeh had a lengthy criminal history of 15 prior arrests, the most recent in August involving the suspect carrying a knife outside a synagogue.
