Authorities say a Lancaster County deputy sheriff and a deputy USA marshal who joined the chase both fired their weapons. The deputy sheriff who fired shots is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation and hearing, Sheriff Terry Wagner said.

During the chase, authorities say, Artis crossed the state capitol grounds and pointed a gun at deputy sheriff. A Lincoln officer was checking out a location where he thought the suspect might be and noticed Artis getting into a vehicle.

According to the Lincoln Journal Star, Ombudsman Marshall Lux described the suspect as an African-American male who was running across the capital lawn. Lincoln police shot a man outside the Nebraska Capitol this afternoon as he ran from arrest, but his name and condition have not been released. The man’s trousers were bloody and he appeared to be hit in the upper thighs, she said. Peschong said the officer recognized Artis because he had stopped him for speeding on July 23, but Artis had fled the scene. Gov. Pete Ricketts was in western Nebraska at the time.
