Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Thursday night, officers on patrol approached a suspicious vehicle near the corner of Cedar and Haines drives in Toms River, Toms River Police Department spokesman Ralph Stocco said in a release Friday morning. The officer contacted the 29-year-old Toms River man.

The shooting was under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutors Office. Police say the man sustained at least one gunshot wound before he ran off.

No officers were injured in the incident. In Dallas, five officers were killed and seven others wounded in a sniper attack during a demonstration where people had gathered to protest officer-involved-shooting deaths in Louisiana and Minnesota.

Brown’s Woods, the Toms River-owned property bounded by Haines Road and Cedar Drive, has been the focus of increased patrols by the Toms River police department in the wake of several crimes and drug overdoses in the previous year.
