Police in Charlotte have now confirmed to ABC News that they have video that shows Keith Lamont Scott had a gun in his hand during his interaction with police officers before he was fatally shot.
After viewing two videos of the shooting, Keith Lamont Scott’s family said it was unclear what he was holding in his hands when police shot him, CNN reported.
Charlotte is the latest USA city to be shaken by protests and recriminations over the death of a black man at the hands of police, a list that includes Baltimore, Milwaukee, Chicago, New York and Ferguson, Missouri.
Scott was shot and killed in an apartment complex parking lot on Tuesday during an encounter with police officers searching for another person wanted for arrest.
The statement reads, “When told by police to exit his vehicle, Mr. Scott did so in a very calm, non-aggressive manner”.
Despite law enforcement’s refusal to release any videos, Scott’s family released a video recorded by his wife to NBC News.
“The family wants answers, the family deserves answers and we will continue to investigate until all of the accurate facts come to light”, Bamberg said.
“We can’t talk about this incident in isolation; we have to look at the root of the problem”.
His family was shown the footage on Thursday and demanded that police release it to the public.
Residents say Scott was unarmed, holding only a book, and disabled by a brain injury.
A curfew order was issued in the USA city of Charlotte, North Carolina, Thursday night as hundreds of protesters marched relatively peacefully through downtown to protest the fatal police shooting of a black man for the third night.
Putney provided some detail on the investigation into Scott’s death. The claim was strongly denied by his family which said Scott was holding a book instead of a gun. Nine people were injured and 44 arrested in riots on Wednesday and Thursday morning, prompting officials to declare a state of emergency. Bamberg said they’re still grieving and aren’t ready.
The Associated Press said that as daylight began go fade, the protesters formed a circle and chanted several slogans, including “We believe that we will win”.
Scott was shot as he walked slowly backward with his hands by his side, Bamberg said.
Mr Scott’s family called on police in Charlotte, North Carolina, to immediately release the two police videos that they saw, adding pressure on police to make them public.
