A man shot by law enforcement Tuesday across the street from the Nebraska Capitol was fleeing from authorities who had initiated a traffic stop, Lincoln police said.

Captain Danny Reitan with the Lincoln Police Department says it happened just after 1 o’clock when a man fled the vehicle on foot. “We’ve also got witnesses who’ve indicated that the officers were telling him to drop something”.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office joined in the pursuit. Members of the Fugitive Task Force were nearby.

Artis was struck at least once, but Wagner said he didn’t know how many shots the deputies fired or where the Aris, of Lincoln, was hit. The suspect was transported from the scene to a local hospital where he is being treated for unknown injuries.

Neither the Deputy Sheriff or the Deputy Marshal were injured. Lincoln police are investigating the shooting.

The deputy sheriff has been placed on administrative leave.

Three elementary schools in the area went on a “lock-out” for about 30 minutes in response to the situation.

The handgun found near the suspect was loaded with a round in the chamber of the firearm.
