A suspect is in custody after deputies say shots were fired at Maple Grove Baptist Church in Haywood County. Gunfire was exchanged between officers and the suspect, whose name has not been released.

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into a shooting involving law enforcement officers near Canton.

Police said a single unidentified man was in the church when gunfire was exchanged between them.

“Usually we have a lady who cleans the church on Wednesdays but the electricity was out so she wasn’t there”, Carlisle said.

Josh Nichols, supervisor of Haywood County Dispatch, told WHNS no one was injured or inside the church at the time of the shooting.
