Man U seeks world class stars, not emulating Leicester plan

Woodward also said that Manchester United will announce plans for restructuring the club’s youth system in the near future.

Premier League leaders Leicester City have become a “reference point” for their rivals but Manchester United are unlikely to copy their blueprint in the transfer market, United (Shenzhen: 000925.SZ – news) ‘s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said on Thursday.

Woodward, the man who appointed Van Gaal to replace David Moyes in the summer of 2014, has been the subject of severe scrutiny from the fans, who have blamed the man who facilitated the Glazer family’s takeover back in 2005 for the club’s lack of direction off the pitch.

They are not yet at the summit of the English Premier League this season, but Manchester United are doing well in other departments, making more money.

“Our financial performance from the second quarter was very strong”.

Leicester famously signed Riyad Mahrez from Le Havre for £400k while Premier League top goal-scorer Jamie Vardy was also bought for £1m from Fleetwood Town. “We have an unmatched track record of player development compared to any other team in England and the runway to our first team is very different to some of our competitors”.

It maintained expectations for revenue of between 500 and 510 million pounds.

Woodward and his senior colleagues at United have pulled off some remarkable commercial deals recently, the biggest one being the world record £750m 10-year kit deal with German sportswear manufacturer Adidas.

United said it expects adjusted core earnings of 178 million pounds to 188 million pounds for the year, an increase from its earlier outlook of 165 million to 175 million.
