Man United boss hints at Old Trafford exit following latest defeat
Carrick, who joined United in 2006 and has won five Premier League titles, told Sky Sports after the Stoke game that the current slump had been painful but everyone at Old Trafford must stick together.

“I said at half-time we had nothing to lose and we coped better after that”. We gave a very bad goal away and then they score out of a free-kick indirect. “I’m not so interested in public sayings because of the saying [Do not say it for the sake of saying it]”.
“And I have to deal with that, but much more important is that the players have to deal with that because they have to perform”. They scored from a free-kick and then it was half-time.
Stoke City was not troubled at the back as they held on for a comfortable victory to hand Manchester United a third consecutive premier league defeat.
As is tradition, Man United’s squad stay in the Lowry before a match-day at Old Trafford and van Gaal’s presence all but confirms he will not be getting sacked before the Chelsea game.
The change did not stop United from losing a fourth straight game for the first time since 1961 to heap even more pressure on van Gaal. He put that down to his players’ fear of failure and conceded that United must somehow find the courage to overcome that if they are to arrest their slide.
“Every Chelsea versus Manchester United game is big but this one is especially of course”.
Van Gaal revealed last week that he had received calls from United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who was not at the Britannia Stadium, former chief executive David Gill and from Sir Alex Ferguson, as the questions over his future have intensified.
“I have analysed that as a outcome of the pressure that you have to cope with as a group as an individual player”.
Adding however, that it is very hard to do that in just two days.
“It is not always the club that has to sack me”, said Van Gaal.
Michael Carrick said victory against Chelsea could have a huge impact on United, who are now sixth in the table, nine points behind leaders Leicester but just three behind fourth-placed Tottenham.
It was one of six saves Butland had to make, with United having double the shots on target and more possession (58 per cent) than Stoke.

“In the second half we played better than the first half but the problem is we didn’t dare to play, and that’s my analysis”.
