WhoScored’s clever machines named Paul Pogba as the man of the match as the Frenchman made his first Premier League start in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Southampton on Friday night. They are creating a good relationship with the team, with the players, even players I could feel the relationship was [previously] not the best, the players are growing that.
A picture of Pogba in a red United shirt adorned the front of the match-day programme for the Southampton game.
Pogba, who is returning to the Red Devils after leaving the club in 2012, comes into the starting line-up for Ander Herrera, as manager Jose Mourinho makes one change from the side that won 3-1 at Bournemouth in their opening game last Sunday. He’s learning how to play with us.
The goals from Ibrahimovic, who now has three in two league games, overshadowed the Old Trafford return of Paul Pogba, who started and played the full 90 minutes after his recent move from Juventus. “I couldn’t be happier with him”.
“The penalty allowed United to play better, after that it was hard and it is a pity of course”, he said.
“There are obvious things he has to improve”.
Southampton suffered an early blow when midfielder Oriol Romeu was forced off by injury, Jordy Clasie taking his place, but their pace on the break caused the home side some anxious moments.
Rooney and Mata both stepped aside for spot-kick duty and the opportunity was handed to Ibrahimovic to continue his excellent start and the Swede simply rolled the ball past Forster to make it 2-0 in the 52nd minute.
Pogba, who played a total of 225 minutes for Manchester United, has also played 67 Premier League minutes before tonight’s game.
Southampton thought they had an equaliser four minutes into the second half when Dusan Tadic headed home, but it was ruled out for offside.
Pogba had a number of chances to extend United’s lead, first heading over from Mata’s corner and then blazing a pair of shots off-target.
Ibrahimovic is now the penalty taker, taking over from Wayne Rooney.
