Man Utd and Man City to meet in EFL Cup fourth round

Manchester United took on the might of Northampton Town in the third round of the League Cup this evening and were very close to a real embarrassment.

United saw off League One Northampton on Wednesday, while City won 2-1 at Swansea to set up the second meeting of the two teams this season following City’s derby win on 10 September.

The Old Trafford club have progressed to the fourth round with their win over the League One outfit, and will now have a chance to avenge their recent derby defeat after they were drawn against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the last-16.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Mourinho said: “We deserved it”.

“I told you two weeks ago, we were disappointed [with the 2-1 loss] because it was in front of our fans against the City opponent”.

Carrick called for quiet, particularly over team selection, saying: “I think everyone has got to calm down a little bit in terms of how they react to all the changes in the team and who is not playing”.

“It was a hard match, but overall a positive performance”.

Majestic midfield playmaker Carrick, man of the match by a long chalk at Sixfields, insists he has nothing to prove to Mourinho despite his first team appearances being limited thus far.

“We still have, I think, six or seven games before that, so we will have time to think about it”.

Having warmed up in a hotel vehicle park before the tie, Jose Mourinho’s side needed second-half goals from Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford to book their place in the last 16.

In other all-Premier League clashes, Southampton beat Crystal Palace 2-0, through goals from Charlie Austin and Jake Hesketh, while Stoke City’s woeful start to the season continued, when they went down 2-1 to Hull City. Northampton’s Jak McCourt escaped what United felt should have been a red card after he came up with a harsh tackle against Memphis Depay in the second half. But I should just wait. “I should be waiting for you to speak about (them) – some with honest vision, some with dishonest vision”, he said.
