“Ashley Young has a severe groin injury, it shall be operated on, so he’s [out] for a long time, ” Van Gaal said on the club’s official website.

United are seven points behind the Gunners following their 1-0 victory over Liverpool last weekend and remain outside the Champions League places in fifth position.

The 30-year-old, who has been deployed at both left and right-back this season, joins Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Marcos Rojo on the club’s injury list, a further blow to United’s already depleted options at the back.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has spoken glowingly of Wayne Rooney’s leadership skills after his half-time rant in the win over Liverpool last Sunday.

“I think this time we have quite a good chance of doing well in the competition”.

However the 64-year-old, citing suggestions he was going to be dismissed during a run of eight games without a win, shrugged off such stories.

Talking about the upcoming Euro 2016, Robson named World Cup champions Germany as the favourites for the title, while expecting some good show by his home country, England, in the continental championship to be played in France from June 10-July 10. The former Barcelona goalkeeper posted a message on Twitter above a picture of United’s training ground saying: “Thank you all for your support during these months of hard work for me”.

“I think the players have to take responsibility, but at the right moment, because I have seen it in my career at the wrong moment”, van Gaal said in comments published by British newspapers on Saturday. The United manager confirmed that Young, who was substituted at Anfield, has a groin problem and will require surgery which will keep him out for a long period of time. “I would like to ask you a lot, Mr Van Gaal”.

VIDEO: Remember when United used to play their part in absolute humdingers like this one? “I want to sign the sort of player who will still be at Manchester United after I am gone but such players are not easy to locate”.

“I have always said Wayne Rooney is not just important as a player but as a captain and he is now encouraging other players to follow his example”. However Adnan Januzaj could come back into the squad after returning from a loan spell with Borussia Dortmund, which was cut short.
