Given the Old Trafford side’s odd start to the season, football fans around the world have been voicing their opinions on the matter – infesting social media with their views on the matter.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes feels that Louis van Gaal has an even more unbalanced squad this season than he did last term due to a lack of strikers.

Louis van Gaal cut a forlorn figure when questioned on the defeat shortly after the match, believing his side had done enough to win the game.

With James Wilson out on loan, club captain Wayne Rooney and new boy Anthony Martial are the only senior squad players available to the Dutch boss – with Van Gaal choosing Marouane Fellaini to lead the line in their 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Saturday.

While Van Persie is undoubtedly drawing to the end of his career and Hernandez never seemed to impress Van Gaal, it would perhaps have been a good idea to keep one or both of them at the club as they are proven goalscorers in the Premier League.

“They’ve let three or four strikers go”. And then the first chance they have out of the corner-kick, they score. “I think if we’d have kept a Van Persie or a Hernandez it looks quite strong”, he added.

“…I was encouraged. They shouldn’t have lost the game”. [Anthony] Martial was getting in behind, and you had the quality of [Bastian] Schweinsteiger in midfield.

“I just think that’s a mistake”.
