Germany national team skipper Bastian Schweinsteiger has announced his retirement from global football.

Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger has finally announced his retirement from worldwide football after making 120 appearance.

The former Bayern Munich man confirmed on his social media accounts on Friday that he has made a decision to retire from the national team.

“In 120 worldwide matches I experienced moments that were indescribably lovely and successful”.

To win the World Cup in 2014 was a historic and also emotional achievement, which I will not be able to repeat in my career. That’s not an understatement; I really mean that.

He moved to Manchester United at the beginning of last season, but found game time limited under then United boss Louis van Gaal, mainly due to injury problems, and will reportedly be a high-profile casaulty under new manager Jose Mourinho.

That’s why it’s right and reasonable to call it a day and wish the team all the best in qualifying for the 2016 World Cup.

Makes global debut in June 2004 in a 2-0 defeat by Hungary in Kaiserslautern.

“In Bastian Schweinsteiger a really great one is leaving the national team”, German football federation president Reinhard Grindel said.

Schweinsteiger scored the first of his 24 goals in a friendly win over Russian Federation in 2005.

Suffers more disappointment as Germany lose 1-0 to Spain in the Euro 2008 final.

To my fans I want to say: ‘It was an honour for me to play for you.

His predecessor as Germany captain, Philipp Lahm, quit in 2014 after Germany lifted the World Cup.

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is the favourite to replace Schweinsteiger as Germany’s captain as Loew heaped praise on his midfield marshal.

Now 31 years old and struggling with fitness, it makes sense for Schweinsteiger to step away.
