A man charged with killing a Georgia police officer over the weekend was arrested after deputies found him hiding in the trunk of his sister’s vehicle, authorities said.
Smith, 31, was responding to a suspicious person call when he encountered Deeds, exited his patrol auto and was shot, Dutton said.
According to the New York Daily News, inmate records show that Deeds was captured Monday in Florida just before 3 a.m.
He said the U.S. Marshals Service had alerted law enforcement that the suspect may be in a gold Nissan Altima possibly heading to Gainesville. Deeds was arrested Hilliard a traffic stop after a deputy spotted a suspicious vehicle, and after searching it found Deeds in the trunk and took him into custody.
The sheriff says Deeds’ sister, 22-year-old Franshawn Deeds, was driving with one passenger, 32-year-old Jamil Marquis Mitchell. Both were arrested on out-of-state warrants for hindering the apprehension of a fugitive.
Leeper told News4Jax that all three waived extradition during their first appearance Monday morning and are waiting on Georgia authorities to pick them up and take them back north. It was not immediately known if any of them had defense attorneys who could comment on the case.
Authorities released few details about the events that led to the shooting. Citizens should not approach Deeds but should call authorities as he is considered armed and risky.
Eastman Patrol Officer Timothy Smith was killed Saturday night while responding to call of a suspicious person with a gun. We see this around our country and even locally that things have happened.
Smith was shot once in the torso. He wasn’t wearing body armor, Dutton said, though he had been issued an armored vest.
Deeds, authorities say, has ties to the south Middle Georgia hamlets of Milan, Chauncey, McRae and Lumber City, which sits in the southeast corner of Telfair not far from where the Ocmulgee River flows into the Altamaha. Smith wasn’t wearing a body camera, Dutton said, but he had a dash camera mounted on his patrol vehicle. The officer had also been talking on his radio.
