SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – A man is dangling from a building Wednesday afternoon in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood in an apparent standoff.

As Bay City News so eloquently puts it: “Officers shut down 10th Street and climbed the fire escape to talk the man down, according to police, setting up large foam mats on the ground and pointing less than lethal projectiles at him”.

The incident began with a California Highway Patrol traffic stop, according to police the auto the suspect was in was stolen, which is probably why the man took off running on foot.

Negotiations to stop him from jumping took several hours.

But it was only when he saw his cat that he made a decision to come down.

The man had run into the building about 2:30 p.m., after he had been stopped while driving a white Toyota Highlander that had no license plates.

Officers later learned that the Highlander had been reported stolen, Williams said.

The suspect’s family had brought the cat to the scene to help coax him down, according to authorities.

UPDATE 6:02 P.M.: The standoff has ended.

I dont remember ever using a cat before, but it worked, Esparza said. Obviously, he had a very emotional attachment to the cat and it was nice to comfort him as much as possible.
