Man who loaned gun to marathon bomber gets time served
‘I was young, dumb, and thought I could outsmart everyone, ‘ 22-year-old Stephen Silva told a judge in U.S. District Court.

Silva, a friend of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev dating back to high school, told authorities Tsarnaev told him the gun would be used to rob college students.
Prosecutors said the Tsarnaev brothers used the gun to kill MIT officer Sean Collier a few days after the bombings, which killed three and injured more than 260.
“You got a gun and you gave it to your friend, and, as a result, a police officer is dead”. He was jailed following the bombing, when the investigation revealed that Silva had lent a gun – an unregistered handgun – to Tsarnaev on the eve of the bombing.
Earlier in December, Tsarnaev’s Defense Attorney Miriam Conrad said Tsarnaev should receive a new trial because half of the charges against him were based on language found unconstitutional by a recent US Supreme Court decision.
The Ruger was recovered at the scene of the Watertown shootout between police and the Tsarnaev brothers that ended with the death of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Silva testified in Tsarnaev’s trial, providing material evidence against the Boston bomber – his childhood friend.
Prosecutors called for a reduced sentence citing the assistance Silva provided regarding Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar and his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
‘The bad facts of this case exemplify, in its starkest terms, the danger addressed by the firearm enhancement – the combination of drug trafficking and gun possession, ‘ they wrote.
The judge on Tuesday chose to sentence Silva to 17 months, which is the time he has already served in prison.
