Man Who Shot Reagan To Be Freed From Hospital
“My father not only could say the Lord’s Prayer, but lived the Lord’s Prayer because of his forgiveness of John Hinckley”, said Reagan, whose book, “Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan”, is available now.

He must undergo treatment at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital no less than once a month.
Hinckley has gradually received permission to leave the hospital for periods of time over the years.
John Hinckley Jr. was sentenced to time in a mental hospital in the shootings, but a judge on July 27, 2016, said Hinckley may leave the hospital August 5. We noted this two years ago, when his attorneys first began petitioning for his full release two years ago. “The court finds by the preponderance of the evidence that Mr. Hinckley will not be a danger to himself or to others if released on full-time convalescent leave to Williamsburg under the conditions proposed”. “They are all lives that matter dearly to us”. The judge said Hinckley could be allowed to live on his own or in a group home after one year.
For more than a year he’s been allowed to spend 17 days a month at his mother’s Virginia home.
The conditions of Hinkley’s release are detailed and strict. So in the end, John Hinckley ended up at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, which is a mental institution, for all these years.
Whenever he is away from his mother’s residence, he must carry a GPS-enabled cell phone that is monitored by the Secret Service. He has expressed an interest in recording an album.
Friedman ordered that Hinckley have no contact with Foster or any member of Reagan’s family, Brady’s family, or those of his other victims. After that, he can live in a seperate home alone or with roommates provided that members of his treatment team approve.
Over a number of years, doctors have said Hinckley is no longer plagued by the mental illness that drove him to shoot the president on March 30th 1981. No additional charges were pursued against Hinckley. Hinckley had allegedly tried to kill Reagan in order to gain the affection of Hollywood starlet Jodie Foster.
“The reason I’m going ahead with this attempt now is because I can not wait any longer to impress you”, he wrote.
Reagan at a hospital in Washington alongside his wife Nancy, after the assassination attempt by John Hinckley. The attack left Reagan and his press secretary, James Brady, wounded, the latter permanently disabled after suffering severe brain damage from an exploding bullet fired from Hinckley’s.22-caliber revolver. “Reagan himself talked about how the law was too easy on criminals and this played right into that”.
Hinckley was 25 years old at the time of the assassination attempt.
Although Hinckley was set to be freed Wednesday, there are numerous restrictions to his freedom, including having no contact with Foster.
The progression of Hinckley’s case, though, has been roughly comparable to the experience of others who have committed similar – but less infamous – acts.

Prosecutors cited what they called a history of deceptive behavior in arguing against more freedom for Hinckley. He is not allowed to drive unaccompanied and may only drive within a 30-mile radius of Williamsburg, unless it is for the objective of his monthly scheduled appointments in Washington, D.C. He is also required to abstain from alcohol and drugs.
