“UC Santa Barbara immediately felt the care and support of our sister campuses during our own crisis, and we are actively trying to return that favor by sending a few of our own C.A.P.S. psychologists up to UC Merced to assist through mutual aid”, Fleming said.
The three others had injuries that were minor enough that they could be treated on campus, Waid said. Police responding. Please avoid the area.
The attacker first slashed a student’s throat with a blade that authorities said was as long as 10 inches.
A male student stabbed and wounded five people as classes got underway at a rural university campus in central California before police shot and killed him. Each occurred here in the Valley, not somewhere else. Officers also went in search of potential additional victims and even sent in a bomb squad as a precaution to ensure that neither the stabbing suspect nor anyone else might have left an explosive devices. “But I am equally concerned for the many witnesses and other members of the campus community who have been deeply traumatized by this event and are receiving counseling”.
As of fall 2015, the university had more than 6,600 students, graduate and undergraduate.
“We knew it could happen”, said Daniel Garcia-Ceja, 21. “That’s what makes it so shocking, that it was one of their own (who attacked)”.
The incident began when the assailant used a knife to stab two people in a second-floor room around the start of an 8 a.m. class, Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke said. It caught everyone by surprise because it was supposed to catch everyone, except for the assailant himself, by surprise.
Authorities have not released a motive behind the attack and whether there is a relationship between the assailant and the victims, said James Leonard, a school spokesman.
“This was a tragic accident, a tragic event, OK?” Warnke credited the worker with saving the life of one of the victims. He distracted the attacker and likely saved the first victim’s life.
“He’s a hero”, Warnke said.
Two of the victims were students, one was a university staff member and one was a construction worker doing a job on campus.
