Police say an off-duty detective tried to tackle him.

Police confirmed an officer was attacked with a meat cleaver and then shot by officers around 5 p.m.

The rookie NYPD officer critically hurt when a hatchet-wielding stranger ambushed him and three colleagues as they posed for a photo in Queens last fall tells NBC 4 NY in his first comments since the brazen attack he thought he was going to die.

“One officer was struck with the meat cleaver & transported to an area hospital”.

The police shouted for him to drop the weapon, but the man did not say a word or respond to their demands, Schneier said.

Police Commissioner Bratton, on his last full day on the job, said police have very good video of the incident.

“I grabbed my camera and ran in the other direction”, the witness said.

Officers chased him down the street.

Police sources said the officer shot a man who was holding a meat cleaver, which he allegedly used to harm the officer. That’s when officers opened fire, he said.

Cory Melton was at the corner of 32nd Street and 7th Avenue checking his phone when he heard shots.

Photos he took show a gray, four-door sedan with bullet holes in the windshield. His photos also show a man sitting on the ground handcuffed behind the auto. New York City police say a man attacked a police officer with a meat cleaver in midtown Manhattan and was shot at least twice du.

Acts of violence are rare in broad daylight in Manhattan, which has seen record-low crime rates after decades of tough policing.

Police spokeswoman Sophia Mason said her office received reports of the attack but had no further details on the nature of the incident or the injuries to the officer.
