According to the report, the man, John Wines, from New Mexico, bought a scratch card last month from a petrol station.
And when he scraped off the silver he was delighted to discover he had revealed five winning numbers – and a potentially life-changing prize of $500,000.
But he left in shock when he went to claim his prize – as the officials said that maximum payout was $250,000, so there was no chance of winning $500,000.
He explained that the scene was the result of ‘misprint’.
John was later offered only $100 as the compensation.
