Weiland’s wife, Jamie Weiland, also confirmed his death to the Los Angeles Tribune. “I can’t deal with this right now”, she told the paper.

Weiland’s Velvet Revolver bandmate, guitarist Dave Kushner, tweeted shortly after Navarro “RIP Scott Weiland”.

Weiland is best known for his time with the band Stone Temple Pilots, which rose to fame in the early ’90s on the strength of such hits as “Plush”, “Vasoline”, and “Interstate Love Song”.

The band released six albums from 1992 to 2010, before firing Weiland in 2013.

Weiland defined Stone Temple Pilots, often abbreviated as ‘STP, ‘ a band that technically existed between 1986 and 2013 but enjoyed its greatest success in the 90s. After the first several albums, however, infighting broke up the band, with Weiland going on to perform with rock supergroup Velvet Revolver, even as his former bandmates carried on without him.

Weiland’s drug history has been well documented and it includes four arrests between 1995 and 2007 on drug-related offenses. A few years later, Weiland pleaded guilty to felony heroin possession in 1998.

At the time of his death, Weiland had been touring with his new band, the Wildabouts.

Former MTV VJ and longtime radio personality Matt Pinfield wrote on Facebook “I am speechless … and sad at the loss of my friend, and although many of you are probably not surprised”. “Send your thoughts toward the family!”

Stone Temple Pilot’s debut album “Core” was released in 1993 and its follow up, “Purple”, came out the following year.
