Well they have to get through the long winter first, but already they’ve laid down a marker and illustrated that the Premier League’s closed shop isn’t quite as closed as it appears at first.

“I think the Premier League is harder than ever for everybody to be consistent”.

Carragher, the former England and Liverpool defender said: “The one worry would be is that they’ve lost 4-1 twice now, to Tottenham and Liverpool – two teams you would say are very similar, they rely on high energy”.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last five top-flight games after victories over Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Watford as well as stalemates with Manchester City and Crystal Palace.

Vardy has earned numerous plaudits this season for his goalscoring ability, which has seen him score in 10 consecutive Premier League matches.
