Steve McClaren believes Newcastle United are getting closer to playing to the level he expects, but need to be more consistent.

The Magpies haven’t enjoyed much success against Manchester City, with them winless in 17 league meetings, losing 15. They covered 115.61 kilometres, whereas Chelsea managed 113.22, which is definitely encouraging against the team that won the league last season. Five wins in 32 games, staying up by the skin of their teeth (last season).

The Serbian’s comments have pleased even the die hard Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern and they hope that this determination can help turn their season around.

The striker returned from suspension against Chelsea last weekend.

Meanwhile, Steve McClaren failed to snag his first win as new Magpies manager after defending champs Chelsea held them to a 2-2 draw at the St. James’ Park last Saturday, as per ESPN. At the other end of the pitch, Newcastle are the joint-lowest scorers in the top-flight, with five goals from seven matches.

McClaren is still searching for his first league win of the campaign, with Newcastle just one place and one point above rivals and bottom club Sunderland.

Newcastle have been abysmal and are yet to win a single game in the league.

However, back-to-back poor performances have resulted in losses to West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur.

City have conceded six goals in their last two league games, compared to just four in the previous 11 fixtures. However, Eliquiam Mangala is fit to return after recovering from a groin injury, and could be paired in the center of defense with Nicolas Otamendi, who scored his first goal for the club against Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday.

Newcastle will definitely be without Papiss Demba Cisse, Steven Taylor, Emmanuel Riviere, Curtis Good and Cheick Tiote for the trip to Manchester City, with all missing out through injuries.

McClaren will have to plan for the game without Gabriel Obertan, Rolando Aarons and Massadio Haidara, who are all still missing, while midfielder Jack Colback is doubtful with a hamstring injury.
