Manchester United aim to prove they can score in Wolfsburg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has backed Anthony Martial to end his goal drought and help the Red Devils avoid an embarrassingly early UEFA Champions League exit.

Schweinsteiger will face a three-match domestic ban when United return from their final Champions League group match against Wolfsburg, when they might need to win to qualify for the knockout rounds.

PSV Eindhoven will be hoping for a much better start at home against CSKA Moscow than in their match in the Russian capital, when it conceded three goals and a penalty in a disastrous first half before scoring twice after the break and nearly snatching a draw. We have that belief.

“That’s why it is very important to beat Wolfsburg”, said the Dutchman, “we can not depend on the result of PSV”.

“We’re playing for the win”, said coach Dieter Hecking as defeat could see Wolfsburg miss out on the last 16 altogether.

“You can not expect a 20 year old in his first year in the Premier League to score every week”.

“I would like to come back in a club with a good project, but, of course, one that is competitive”.

“But I am convinced he shall continue with his performances and also that he will score at the right moments again”.

“I know that the team will give everything to use this historic chance”. I didn’t expect that.

“It’s very important for the football club and for the players to get to the next stage and we are going out to win in Wolfsburg”.

Van Gaal’s has often suggested he has been pleased by his team’s ability to dominate possession in games, but it is their lack of attacking intend that has infuriated many this season.

Rooney has been far from his best this season, but United fans would surely prefer to be with the England captain than without him for a game the team probably has to score in – and win. I know that and I have to explain it to everybody.

“We beat Wolfsburg in Manchester and we want to do it again”.

They are still in the top four of the Premier League but there is a sense that all is not well at the club, with the fans unhappy at the style of football they are watching.

Schmeichel was speaking at an event to mark the second anniversary of United’s partnership with Eurobank Serbia ahead of United’s crunch Champions League game against German side VfL Wolfsburg on Tuesday.

“If we can get it, then psychologically it will be good for us because we’ll get a little bit more space”, said the 25-year-old Germany worldwide.
