Manchester United Complete Signing of Argentina no 1

Van Gaal’s debut campaign last season got off to a poor start as his side only managed to pick up 12 points from their opening eight Premier League matches.

Sergio Romero has completed his transfer to Manchester United, effectively ending Victor Valdes’ career at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal claimed he was forced into signing Sergio Romero because of the uncertainty surrounding David de Gea, who could still leave Manchester United for Real Madrid, according to the Dutchman. “Yes of course I do hope De Gea shall stay, but in this world of football you never know”, he said.

When asked what kind of player he needs to make United true competitors in the coming year, Van Gaal added: “I can give examples of champions, Bayern Munich have (Franck) Ribery and (Arjen) Robben, Chelsea have (Eden) Hazard and Willian, Real Madrid – Ronaldo and (Gareth) Bale, Barcelona have Neymar and (Lionel) Messi”.

Cristiano Ronaldo would fit the bill perfectly and his apparent rift with new Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez has fuelled speculation of a return to Old Trafford. This deal, especially on a free, appears to be a bargain.

Rafinha’s through ball played in Sergi Roberto in the right-hand channel, but De Gea stood strong, saving the one-on-one situation low down whilst managing to firmly grasp the ball and prevent any rebounds. He’s lived his whole life at this club. Despite his global acclaim, the new ‘keeper has had a rather odd club career.

He joined Sampdoria in 2011 and spent the 2013-14 season on loan at Monaco. At club level, he has rarely been first choice since leaving Eredivisie, but represents a luxurious back-ip option.

“We have to look for more balance in the team and for more creativity”.

Rooney scored only 14 goals last season – his lowest tally since joining United 11 years ago – but insists he is capable of 30 if he is played up front every week. “Probably he has to prove it. I have fully confidence that he shall do that”, Van Gaal said. A ‘keeper with global experience, United are in a safe pair of hands should he replace current incumbent De Gea in the number 1 jersey.
