Jose Mourinho delivered a swift and flawless response to his critics as he oversaw Manchester United absolutely obliterating Leicester City 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney was left out of Jose Mourinho’s starting XI for the team’s clash with Leicester City on Saturday.

Demarai Gray scored a contender for goal of the season to provide Leicester some consolation in the scond half, but United saw out the game in comfort.

After United were beaten in their previous two league games, Mourinho couldn’t afford his Rooney gamble to backfire and he delighted with the way his team blitzed Leicester with a four-goal first half.

The visitors were caught napping as Blind took a quick corner and Mata was free to square for an unmarked Rashford to finish from close range. United survived a tentative start to lead through a Chris Smalling header in the 22nd minute. Before that, he was also dropped for the last three games of Alex Ferguson’s long reign in the 2012-13 season after falling out with the then-United manager.

The opener appeared to remove the shackles as the home side grew in confidence and attacked with panache.

Old Trafford was in full voice by this point, but the noise reached deafening levels just two minutes later when Pogba powered Blind’s corner beyond Zieler to get off the mark for United.

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri rang the changes at the break, bringing on Andy King and Gray for star men Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez with an eye on their midweek Champions League meeting with Porto.

Leicester started the match on the front foot and bossed the first 15 minutes of the game, nearly scoring off a corner.

Zieler had to scramble across to prevent an exceptional 30-yard strike from Pogba going into the top corner, but the champions’ goal was now under siege and United netted three goals in five minutes towards the end of the opening period. But fortune favoured the hosts, who held on for a comfortable win that provisionally moves them up into third place in the Premier League table.
