Mourinho has stated that there shouldn’t be too much read into the skipper’s place on the bench and that the England global is still critical to the side’s chances. Hopes had been lifted by a (late, late) EFL Cup win over Accrington Stanley, but the way in which Southampton condemned West Ham to a fourth successive Premier League defeat with only one shot on target from the “home team” tells its own story. It’s clear at this point that the entire situation in the media was somewhat of a controversy around the English captain, and through all the defence I haven’t yet seen a legitimate claim about what he offers to the side from a footballing perspective.

The pace of United’s play was far quicker with Anders Herrera in central midfield rather than Fellaini. Wayne has to either fit into that going forward, or he’s going to be sitting where he’s sitting’.

Gary Neville believes Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba must still prove themselves despite Manchester United’s spectacular performance against Leicester City.

“Pogba was instrumental in that first half”.

Although it is too early to assume our midfield problems have been sorted, the duo helped Man United cruise to one of our most convincing victories since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Chris Smalling has backed Manchester United and England’s “main man” Wayne Rooney to start firing again after being dropped by Jose Mourinho.

“I think the team played very well, you score four goals, and the striker doesn’t score a goal and I think the striker plays phenomenal”.

The Portuguese manager praised United’s first-half showing, and says he is unsure of a time the Old Trafford fans were treated to such a rampant 45 minutes. Each player kept a watch out for their teammate standing in front of him, thus closing down the runs of attackers.

The Dutchman was sacked at the end of last season after another disappointing campaign saw them miss out on the UEFA Champions League.

Mata set up the third, receiving a quickly-taken corner by Blind next to the byline and crossing low for Rashford to tap in.

“They’re not 100 per cent as I always think this hard moment where you really feel that you have to win the match I prefer to go with players who are 100 per cent ready by the physical point of view and mental point of view”. I think it was down to the fact that we started very well and didnt stop until the game was closed.

Jose Mourinho says Wayne Rooney is still his man and a big player for Manchester United
