Manchester United launch surprise move for Southampton forward Sadio Mane

Manchester United have made a bid for Southampton striker Sadio Mane.

Mané now has three years left on his contract at Southampton and is therefore unlikely to come cheap, so it’s highly likely that United’s bid is just a place-saver while they pursue other, more illustrious, possibly Thomas Muller-shaped options.

The 23-year-old was only snapped up by Southampton last summer, with Ronald Koeman’s men raiding Red Bull Salzburg for the former FC Metz man.

The tremendous year he enjoyed has brought him to the attention of Louis van Gaal, who desperately needs to add more fire power in front of goal, now it has become apparent that Pedro is heading to Stamford Bridge rather than Old Trafford.

United have refused to confirm the size of the bid for Mane, but Southampton are understood to be ready to fight to keep the forward.

Mane has impressed since moving to St. Mary’s last summer and holds the record of the fastest ever hat-trick in Premier League history following his triple in the Saints’ 6-1 thrashing of Aston Villa last term.

United were reported to be close to the capture of Barcelona forward Pedro last week, but it emerged on Wednesday the club had pulled out of the running to sign the 28-year-old.
