Manchester United legend blasts players (and defends Louis van Gaal)

In the wake of the defeat, Van Gaal reiterated his pre-match comments that Schweinsteiger, 31, is not playing as well as he did during his 14 years at Bayern, who he left for Old Trafford before the start of the season.

Louis van Gaal has been criticised in recent weeks for United’s lack of attacking football following a return of six goals in their last nine games in all competitions before Tuesday’s clash.

“United just look like an average team, really, and with an average team you get average performances”, said former United midfielder Paul Scholes.

Reflecting his views on the same, the Dutchman said that although he can not defend the growing criticism against him, his club performed better than past year, the Guardian reported.

Ferdinand continued to say “when you spend £250million, to come out and say you don’t have a chance of winning the Champions League is astonishing” as Van Gaal said this at his pre-match press conference before the Wolfsburg game.

A night of naive defensive blunders saw United lose 3-2 at Wolfsburg and finish third in Group B, consigning them to the Thursday night sideshow known as the Europa League. I am sure that Manchester United are still going to get a lot of joy out of Schweinsteiger’.

As a whole, United should be very disappointed they didn’t progress through their group with PSV Eindhoven and CSKA Moscow not the biggest of sides.

There are some intriguing draws that could be thrown up, with United facing the prospect of a clash with a Valencia side managed by their former player Gary Neville, as well as a possible clash with Robin van Persie’s Fenerbahce.

“I think managers get too much credit when things are going well and they get too much criticism when things aren’t going so well”.

“I was in a squad that went into the Europa League (in 2011) and it’s an embarrassment”, he said.

In any event, the Europa League isn’t that bad.

Throughout its history, Manchester United has won the Champions League three times. The final of the season 1998-1999 is perhaps the best known. The last ten minutes we played with ten men, with eleven it was not easy but with ten it was more hard.

“In the first game against PSV we created a lot of chances, but we didn’t score”.

“But I prefer to concentrate on us, and the way we are trying to be more solid and consistent”.
