Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: ‘We cannot win Champions League’

United have scored just seven goals in their last 10 games in all competitions after a goalless draw against a battling West Ham side, who themselves could have won at Old Trafford.

He said: “If they don’t like my style of Manchester United, everyone knows all the teams of Louis van Gaal play like that”. I don’t understand (why) they are shouting “attack, attack, attack” because we are the attacking team, not West Ham, and it’s the same in every game because we are dominating more.

‘When we have a lot of ball possession, you have a lot of ball possession to create chances and not to play the ball around and don’t score. In my team a lot of players get the chances, not always the fixed player.

Asked afterwards whether it meant his team were missing a clinical finisher, Van Gaal insisted players like Aguero or Suarez would score goals in his team.

Manchester United manager, Louis Van Gaal, has revealed the only reason that would make him resign at Old Trafford.

After falling out with a number of players, van Gaal walked away from Barcelona during his second spell at the club and he left his role as Ajax technical director following a power struggle with then manager Ronald Koeman.

United, missing injured captain and top scorer Wayne Rooney with an ankle injury, created several chances, but lacked a cutting edge in a dour encounter that will heap further pressure on van Gaal, who has been widely criticised for his conservative tactics.

The result saw Manchester United dropping to the fourth place while West Ham now sit in the sixth place (for now, since Liverpool, Everton and Crystal Palace have a game in hand). We put players in the position to score but you need composure and luck to score.

United failed to fully capitalise on Manchester City’s defeat at Stoke as they missed several chances to earn a much-needed win.

“The most important thing is that we’re dominant and creating chances”.

Fellaini and Bastian Schweinsteiger were fortunate to escape at least a booking for a studs-up tackle and elbowing an opponent in the face, respectively, in the first half. Also we have to be more composed in that situation’.

“You can win, and when we are there we shall try to do everything but you also have to be realistic”.

A repeat of this spluttering effort at Wolfsburg on Tuesday could prove disastrous in a game they need to win to be sure of progressing in the Champions League.

“They are different than, let’s say, the [Alex] Ferguson era, when especially at home they were electric, playing more vertically”, he said. “It is a good day”.
