John Obi Mikel of Chelsea holds off a challenge from Anthony Martial of Manchester United during the Barclays Premier League match between Manchester United and Chelsea at Old Trafford on December 28, 2015 in Manchester, England.

Chelsea, who lost Kurt Zouma to what appeared to be a serious knee injury, had opportunities to level, only for the impressive David de Gea to keep out Branislav Ivanovic’s volley and Cesc Fabregas’s near-post effort. Here are five talking points from today’s game. United has not denied reports it is pursuing former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho as a possible replacement.

Borthwick-Jackson has recently become a mainstay in the Red Devils first eleven, starting their last three games on the left side of defence despite his young age of 19.

Minutes later United were ahead when Lingard, who had his back to goal, controlled Cameron Borthwick-Jackson’s cross from the left before turning and striking the ball into the corner and past the dive of Courtois.

“I said before when we were one point from the relegation zone our target must be fourth place for the Champions League, but we need to start winning games”, Hiddink added.

Chelsea captain Terry praised his side’s “great response”, adding: “We’ve shown that character since the manager came in and that’s good to see”. Souness felt it was easily United’s best performance for some time, described them as a real “team” and felt they were unfortunate not to depart Chelsea with three points. “We were the better team… we had the better chances but we didn’t win”. Then we did not keep the ball in the way we have to. The striker has scored six goals in his last eight matches, and will look to bully the United defenders.

“Without seeing all the images, they started well and they stretched us out and because of that we dropped back instead of going forward”.

Despite his annoyance, Mata said he was happy to be a part of United’s improved form, which he hoped would help continue to bring improved results in spite of the draw on the road.
