Manchester United snatch late win against Liverpool, Arsenal held at Stoke

A tame encounter between North-West rivals Liverpool and Manchester United ended in a 1-0 win for the visiting side United, at Anfield on Sunday (Monday AEDT).

Rooney’s strike – United’s first shot on target – came after Marouane Fellaini’s header rebounded off the crossbar and the England captain has now scored in four successive games for his club for the first time since March 2012.

Wayne Rooney allowed himself a moment of self-indulgence after his late goal ensured Manchester United a 1-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday in soccer’s English Premier League.

“I think he is a fantastic Manchester United striker for the media but he was also that in the first half of the season”. I think at times it wasn’t pretty and I think in the second half we played a bit more direct, but we camped in their half. “We scored one goal, stayed strong and, at the end, it is three points which is awesome”.

“De Gea played exceptionally well and was key in keeping them in the game, and when you have a world-class player like Rooney, something can happen, and it did”. That’s two positives from the game.

Only two weeks ago there was talk that Dutchman Louis van Gaal was going to be sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho but now he has come out and said the club are still in the title race.

“I really believe we have a good squad of players but we need to be winning”.

“A lot of the things we did today were good”, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said.

United took all three points from Anfield in a smash and grab display, after Liverpool had dominated possession and chances.

There is nobody as prolific as Rooney in the ranks of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who once again preferred Roberto Firmino to £32.5 million ($46.3 million, 42.5 million euros) striker Christian Benteke in attack. “It could have been a different game altogether but we paid for the chances we missed and conceding from a set piece was disappointing too”. This game shall give a big boost to the players, to the fans, to everybody in the environment of Manchester United, and we have to continue of course. “But in terms of management I think he is a top-class manager and has been for many years”, he added. “It’s good to know that if we are beaten as a defence, we still have a great chance to keep the ball out”.
