Mandela grandson charged with raping girl of 15

Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mbuso, was arrested and charged with rape in Johannesburg, South Africa. He remains in police custody and will return to the Johannesburg magistrates court on Friday for a bail hearing. The 24-year-old is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl. The matter was reported to police a week later and Mandela was arrested last Saturday, she said.

The alleged rape took place on August 7 in the bathroom of a restaurant in Greenside, in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs.

The spokesman of the girl’s family told to the Daily Sun that the girl was with her friends in the restaurant when it happened.

Police spokeswoman Brigadier Mashadi Selepe confirmed the rape was reported on August 14. The spokesperson said that “Madikizela-Mandela first asked the girl’s father to hold off on filing charges while her family had time to deal with the issue”.

Nelson Mandela was revered in South Africa and around the world for his efforts to promote racial reconciliation and peace, but members of his family have frequently courted controversy.

His bail application has been postponed until Tuesday, meaning he can not legally be named until then.

Selepe added that she was unaware of the reports that Madizikela-Mandela tried to interfere with the case, sending a bodyguard posing as a cop.

Dwomoh said he is willing to cooperate with the investigation, but has not been interviewed by police.

In his affidavit, Mandela claims he had consensual sex with the complainant, whose age was called into question during Friday’s proceedings.
