Mandela grandson’s rape case to resume on Friday

The grandson of Winnie Mandela and former President Nelson Mandela has been arrested for allegdly raping a 15-year old girl at a popular Johannesburg restaurant in Greenside, South Africa.

He was arrested and appeared in court in Johannesburg on Monday.

The two families had a meeting this weekend, in which Madikizela-Mandela promised to hand Mbuso Mandela to the police, and to have a press conference, but the latter has not taken place.

He is expected to apply for bail later this week, the Sunday Times of South Africa has reported.

Mbanuso Mandela, 24, who is also Winnie Mandela’s grandson, reportedly followed the girl into a restaurant’s toilet on Friday and grabbed her there.

He said: ‘Just because they have a famous surname, they think they can get away with crime… What’s more, “Winnie’s bodyguard went to the family pretending to be a cop”, reports the Daily Sunday. Children can’t just be defiled and then everything is alright. “The girl is young and doesn’t even drink”, the spokesperson to South African media.

Brigadier Mashadi Selepe, a police spokeswoman, said the investigation was ongoing.

Selepe insisted that Mbuso Mandela would be treated like any other citizen despite his family name, adding: “All the rights of suspects are upheld during their investigation and lawful custody”.

Yaw Dwomoh, the owner of Mammas Shebeen, told the paper that police had not yet approached him.
