Maniac Mansion will still be playable in Day of the Tentacle Remastered

Check out this comparison shot of the old and new game released by Double Fine to see just how great Day Of the Tentacle looks now. It’s the successor to Maniac Mansion mostly in themes but not necessarily in design. However, what you did with one character in the past, would have an effect on the future timelines. While Double Fine has encountered some financial hiccups with their Kickstarter project, and ran into some troubles with their audience over failing to deliver some of their recent projects in the way that some fans were hoping for, they’re attempting to rekindle trust by hammering out a few remastered games before moving on to something new. I don’t think I slept until that purple tentacles evil had been vanquished.

Originally built using the classic LucasArts SCUMM engine, it has a certain pixellated charm today, much like other games built during that period, but I can’t help but like the crispness and colour depth of the new HD version. A year or two later, once I’d finally managed to get a CD-Rom, I picked the game up again on CD, so I could re-experience the game, only this time with full, digitised voice.

It also has remastered sound, an optional modern UI, and the whole original Maniac Mansion as a bonus, as well as commentary from Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, Larry Ahern, Peter Chan, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian.

This will be the second time Double Fine has restored an old classic adventure from the studio’s founder, Tim Schafer, back when he was still at Lucasarts.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is due in “early 2016” on PS4, Vita, PC and Mac. As you work on these games, you remember little things… you were a different person when you made those games.
