Manjula to be second woman Chief Justice of Bombay HC
Mumbai: Manjulla Chellur, chief justice of the Calcutta High Court, has been appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court with effect from August 24. She is reportedly going to be sworn in by Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao on August 23.

Her appointment follows retirement of D H Waghela as Chief Justice of the Bombay HC on August 10. He hailed from Gujarat and was appointed Bombay HC CJ on February 15 this year being transferred as CJ from Orissa HC.
Manjula Chellur, who will retire in 2017, joined the Calcutta High Court as its Chief Justice in 2014.
Born on December 5, 1955 at Bellary in Karnataka, Chief Justice Chellur is the daughter of C. Bheemappa Chetty and Rangamma Chetty. She joined the Karnataka judicial service as district judge in 1988 after ten years as a lawyer.
Justice Girish Chandra Gupta will be appointed as the interim Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court.
She had delivered verdicts in several high-profile cases, including the rape case against Rajya Sabha Chairman PJ Kurien and the “Ice Cream Parlour sabotage case” involving former Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan.

In 1978, she enrolled as an advocate and was the first woman advocate to practise in Ballari. She also served as a legal advisor for several banks, agro industries, the KEB, KMF and APMC.
