Expressing concern over rising intolerance, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday vowed to fight the “diabolical design” of divisive forces to spread hatred, which posed a threat to the unity of the country.

Paying homage to former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary, she said: “Indira Gandhi believed that without empowering the socially backward classes, unity in diversity is not possible”. A leader with courage and compassion.

The former Prime Minister was fondly remembered at functions organised by the district units of the Congress party in the two states, including Union Territory Chandigarh. She defeated Morarji Desai in 1966 to succeed Shastri as the Prime Minister of India.

Gandhi fell to assassins’ bullets on this day in 1984 at her 1, Safdarjung Road residence in New Delhi. She also became the prime minister from January 14, 1980 till her death.

On the occasion of the 140th birth anniversary of Patel, Independent India’s first Home Minister, Mr. Modi, who flagged off the “Run for Unity”, acknowledged Indira Gandhi.

However, it was a foregone conclusion that Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s birth anniversary, which falls on the same day, observed as National Unity Day, would be dearer to the Bharatiya Janata Party government.
