Manning tossing one-liners in TV commercials

Lionel Richie smiles, plays the piano and sings “It’s Peyton on Sunday Mornings” in a new series of DirectTV commercials starring the former Denver Broncos quarterback. “We’ve never featured a recently retired player before, so we felt this being Peyton’s first year out of the league we had one shot to really capture that transition and his need for NFL Sunday Ticket”. All the while, Lionel Richie is serenading them. He also is seen sitting at home as he calls his brother Eli Manning hoping that he can come over and watch football with him. “I’ll make nachos!” Peyton tells Eli.

“I can’t right now, man, I’m playing”, Eli responds. Manning responds by penciling him on Tuesday. He then fills out a depressingly appointment-free day planner. The beleaguered store clerk doesn’t seem impressed. Ah yes, 18. The old number.

Other spots in the campaign depict Peyton Manning on a park bench talking up the benefits of the Sunday Ticket package with an older gentleman. I can feel the sadness that sinks into Peyton knowing that he is retired and can’t hang out with his brother.

So if you thought Peyton’s retirement meant he would no longer be in half the commercials on your TV every Sunday, it appears you were mistaken.
