It is understood the Hornets are after a right wing-back and the former Liverpool defender is a key target as the end of the transfer window approaches.

Atletico Madrid full-back Javier Manquillo will travel to Sunderland today to have a medical ahead of a proposed move to Wearside, Mundo Deportivo report.

This will be the second time 22 year-old Manquillo will appear in the English top flight, having joined Liverpool on loan in 2014 under the stewardship of Brendan Rodgers.

Along with Mawson, Sunderland are also keen on Atletico Madrid full-back Manquillo, who continues to struggle to force his way into the Spanish side’s starting XI.

The Madrid-born right-back, who has represented Spain at every youth level from Under 16 to Under 21, became his career in Real Madrid’s youth team before leaving for city rivals Atletico in 2007.

Manquillo had a hard year on-loan at Liverpool two seasons ago, but impressed last term in France with Olympique Marseille.
