Mansur Ball-Bey Is the Latest Police Shooting Victim
The medical examiner’s findings appear to contradict the police, who said that officers opened fire after the teen pointed a gun at them. The 18-year-old died at the scene. Undercover officers wearing bulletproof vests were stationed at the rear of the house and they ordered Mr. Ball-Bey and the other man to stop and drop their guns.

Activists said the police response was unnecessarily “militaristic” and an affront to free-speech rights.
Wooten said Ball-Bey did not live in the community and was in the area visiting relatives, but not at the house where police were serving the warrant, he said.
After protests in and around Fountain Park on Wednesday and Thursday, Dotson said his officers are on a heightened state of alert for the weekend.
Bryce Harvey is a barber whose business is close to where Ball-Bey was killed. They ask students to play the role of officers, making decisions in law-enforcement scenarios.
“It has been very hard to see and experience this”, said the Rev. Ronald Bobo, a coalition member and pastor of West Side. “The truth is there are a lot of different ways a person could get shot in the back running away, and that in and of itself doesn’t mean a bad shooting”. “They don’t want to get shot by the police”. It’s the same block where a toddler in July shot himself in the head after an uncle allegedly left him in a room with loaded weapons. The child survived. He said residents in the area deserve peace. Police say three of the four weapons were stolen, including the gun Ball-Bey was holding. Earlier last month when the murder total had reached 93 homicides (compared with 58 at the same point last year) police had made only 29 arrests.
“They always say that”, Phillips said. “Everyone is at fault”. Meanwhile, a vacant building and at least one auto were set on fire.
Officers detail the gear they carry, explain the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony, play dispatch recordings and show crime maps of students’ neighborhoods. He called for patience during the investigation.
“There are so many variables”, said Graham. “Rosie is profoundly appreciative for the work the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office has done and the diligence of the local police”. Slay left to attend a family funeral, and the ministers stayed for a private discussion of the tensions. Teddy bears were tied to a fence as a shrine. “Police officers have to do their job”. A FedEx spokesman confirmed that he worked there part-time.
Dotson said he wanted the community to come together lawfully. “He isn’t any drug dealer”.
Ball-Bey’s cousin, Shonetda Ball, owns the house where the shooting occurred.
Sheerer, 25, was arrested Friday night at his home in Barnegat, police said.
“We are completely separate from the police department”.
“We have a right to live in freedom and specifically free from fear”, said Montague Simmons, executive director of the Organization for Black Struggle.
“Our goal was to keep people safe”, Dotson said. After that didn’t have an effect, tear gas was used. “Our officers were being assaulted, hit with bricks, so that’s when it became an unlawful assembly”.

The police chief added that a gun reportedly carried by Ball-Bey was recovered at the scene and that crack cocaine and three guns were found inside the home from which the suspects ran.
